our mission

"Our mission is to create the most luxury, sustainable garden rooms whilst minimising our impact on the climate".

eco garden rooms

Hello and welcome to Alpaca.

My name is Tim Worsley, founder and CEO. Read on for a short history of who we are, how we got started, our guiding ethos and plans for the future…

early days

Spanning a decade as a carpenter for TV, film and live events, I spent many enjoyable years building sets, props and installations. It was fun and varied work and I met many unique and interesting people. But it always bothered me at the end of a shoot or live event, seeing the vast amounts of materials that were routinely wasted…

These experiences gave me the incentive to start a business where the cost to the environment wasn’t a mere afterthought.

After enrolling on a business startup course, my first venture involved making furniture & home-ware from repurposed skateboard decks (9T9 percent). Around the same time I started renting a space at Blackhorse Workshop, where I met a diverse community of like-minded designer-makers.

the 'covid effect'

When Covid struck the UK in 2020, the move to flexible work was well underway. The subsequent lock-downs accelerated this trend, leading many working professionals to rethink their work-life balance.

A home office, gym or studio soon became the “must have” luxury addition for many garden owners. The flexibility a garden room offers also provided much-needed space for those with growing families.

Like the South American mammal we take our name from, the combination of breathable insulation and mechanical ventilation (MVHR) in our rooms provide total year-round comfort and fresh, filtered air for an altogether healthier environment.

Four years on and we have grown into a small but expert team, with a diverse set of skills. We also work with local, certified electricians and other trades depending on the needs of each project.

“Our ongoing mission is to create the most luxury, energy-efficient garden rooms, whilst minimising our impact on the climate.

For this reason we only select materials with the lowest carbon footprint and ‘low impact’ build methods to minimise waste”.

climate & construction

The building and construction sector is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for a staggering 37% of global emissions*.

According to the U.K. Green Building Council, the construction sector uses more than 400 million tons of material a year, many of which has an adverse impact on the environment.

To put that in context, for every 3 residential houses built, another house worth of landfill is generated during its construction.

Article 25: More than a Building

At Alpaca we take a different approach. Combining carbon-negative materials such as hemp or wood fibre, with ‘low impact’ build methods, our garden rooms are designed for the lightest environmental footprint, whilst providing the ultimate in comfort.

We are also proud to support Article 25, an architectural charity providing schools, housing and hospitals for people in the Global South. As we grow we aim to increase our donation, helping the great work they do for those most affected by climate change.

impact

To date, we have helped scores of London home-owners realise their dream of a luxury, eco-friendly garden retreat, freeing up space in their homes and enhancing their work-life balance.

Here are some of the kind words we have received from our clients:

We’re delighted with our new office space.

Tim and the team at Alpaca took the time to understand our needs and helped us decide on the design and materials at every stage of the build.

The workmanship was top notch throughout and the finished product looks great at the bottom of our garden.

The room itself is spacious, well insulated and comfortable, and we’re looking forward to making the most of the extra space for years to come”.

Michael Campbell, Wanstead

“We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect garden office! We worked closely with Alpaca to discuss the look I was striving for and they delivered the room I was imagining in my mind!

I highly recommend Tim and his team to anyone wishing to utilise their garden space to create another room; it’s really changed how we’re able to function downstairs-and is gorgeous to look out onto as well!”

Carrie Burton, Walthamstow

where to next?

Looking forward, our vision is to incorporate more climate-friendly methods and materials into our designs, improving the speed, quality and green credentials of our products, whilst maintaining the luxury standards our clients expect.
